Pre-Purchase Survey

This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when uprchasing a new or used vessel.  Condition and overall operation of the vessel should be examined.  This covers structural integrity, electrical systems, the propulsion system, the fuel system, other machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as out-of-water inspection and a seatrial.

Preliminary Inspection

One of the most disappointing moments in the boat buying experience is when you show up at the boat and find that the photos do not appear to be the same vessel you are looking at! 

This can be quite a disappointment if you live in one state and have to travel to another to see the boat.  

Your time is valuable.  With a relatively small investment, you can send your representative to take a preliminary walkthrough on the boat.  

A pair of experienced eyes and a couple of tools can reveal valuable information and then  you can decide if you wish to spend the time and expense of a full survey.  Photos can be very deceiving, even if the person taking the photo has no intention of be deceptive.   

Insurance Survey

This inspection is performed so that the insurance company can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk for its intended use.  They are interested in structural integrity and safety for the crew and boat.  Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats.  They will also want to know the vessels' fair market value.

Damage Survey

The surveyor can be retained by an insurance company to determine the nature, cause and extent of damage sustained and may be asked to recommend repairs, review estimates or to determine the pre-loss value of a vessel.  A vessel owner can retain a surveyor for the same purposes,but for the owners behalf.


This inspection is performed to gather enough information to justify or determine the fair market value of the vessel.  This is normally needed for financing, estate settlements, donations and legal cases.  



Whether you are refitting your cruising yacht, doing regular maintenance or upgrading the current systems, there are times when having a fresh look by another pair of  experienced eyes could make the most of your investment.

Seminars can be fun but more than that they can use someone elses years of experience and knowledge to educate you in a very specific area in a very short period of time.  The one thing we all need more of is time.



Rounding the mark. 

After over 30 years in the bilges, close to 20 professionally and nearly 5 of those surveying boats and so nearing the end my five year self imposed apprenticeship, some say I am becoming a competent marine surveyor. Perfect 20/20 X-ray vision? (close, cataract surgery two years ago), able to leap tall buildings in a single bound? More powerful than a locomotive? Faster than a speeding bullet? Never missing something during an inspection? NO! But gaining experience every day. My beautiful assistant and I have decided to treat all of our clients and ourselves more fairly. We will no longer be doing surveys on a per foot basis, which often penalizes the bristol condition 15 year old 40 footer and subsidizes the 5 year old 40 footer loaded to the gunwales with spares, clothes and DoubleStuff Oreos. From here on, everyone will pay a fee for my professional services that directly corresponds to the amount of time and effort involved in the inspection and report writing for a given vessel. All survey work will hence forth be done on an hourly rate basis. Current owners of vessels that have been prepared for a survey and do not suffer from extensive deferred maintenance and Ramon Noodle hoarding will now receive some financial reward for the time and effort they have invested in their boats. Prospective buyers will now have piece of mind that all the time needed will be devoted to their pre-purchase condition and value surveys.
